Long-term cure rates for advanced rectal and cervical cancer are disappointing. Extensive local growth of rectal and cervical cancer without evidence of extra pelvic dissemination occurs frequently but does represent a small number of potentially curable carcinoma with standard cancer operations.
With advancement of anesthesia and pre and post-operative care and diagnostic method, efficacious surgical therapy is possible which requires radical en-bloc removal of all pelvic exenteration is a formidable surgical changeable. Because the postoperative mortality is high(8~15%) with high morbidity, pelvic exenteration should be considered only in centers where multidisciplinary expertise is available.
